Teaching Sustainable Fashion: An Imperative for Fashion Schools

By January, 2024No Comments

Eco-responsible fashion has become a contemporary imperative, with consumers increasingly aware of the impact of the textile industry on the environment. In this era of social and environmental responsibility, IFA Paris’ Bachelor in Fashion Sustainability trains new generations of designers and managers in the social and environmental issues facing the fashion industry.

Environmental Responsibility

One of the main challenges facing the fashion industry is its environmental impact. At IFA Paris we focus on adopting sustainable practices, teaching students how to minimize waste generated during manufacturing, integrate recycled materials into their creations or use natural dyeing techniques. Raising awareness of responsible consumption and eco-design is thus a fundamental pillar of their training.

Social Responsibility

Sustainable fashion is not just about the environment; it’s also about working conditions. Our program includes courses on fashion ethics, addressing issues related to workers’ rights such as fair remuneration for labor or safe working conditions. Students are encouraged to design collections that respect human rights, while promoting transparent business practices.

Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Fashion

The Bachelor Fashion Sustainability is distinguished by its commitment to innovation. Students are encouraged to explore and integrate new technologies into their designs, such as 3D printing, intelligent textiles or laser cutting of patterns to reduce fabric waste. These advances are helping to rethink the traditional conception of fashion, placing innovation at the service of sustainability.

Raising Consumer Awareness

Our program not only trains designers, but also ambassadors for sustainable fashion. Students learn how to make consumers aware of the impact of their fashion consumption choices. Awareness-raising campaigns, organization of events and collaborations with committed brands enable students to share their vision and become agents of change within the industry.

“Aiming for sustainability in fashion, students following the Fashion Sustainability Bachelor program learn how to approach contemporary fashion collections and production using an eco-design approach. They learn how to disrupt and help transform the way production is implemented and value is created within a fashion brand or company… from managing and reducing the impacts of their supply chain and operations, to generating positive performance throughout the value chain… environmentally, circularly, sustainably, socially, culturally, aesthetically…”
