Since September 26th, IFA Paris students are back on the Paris campus. After a record number of students, IFA Paris is also celebrating two years since the launch of the world’s first Bachelor in Fashion Sustainability.

As defined in the report of the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development, known as the Brundtland Report, “sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Today more than ever, we are facing a major climate emergency which, without concrete actions, will have a very heavy impact on tomorrow’s world. It is therefore essential that all the actors on the planet act and find solutions to slow down the climate change that has been growing in recent years.

The fashion industry is one of the most polluting and our students are aware of this. That’s why the Fashion Sustainability Bachelor’s program examines how companies in the sector can implement eco-responsible practices in their production by stopping the waste of resources and by designing their products with environmental and social respect.

We met our professor, responsible for CSR development and creator of the Bachelor Fashion Sustainability, Hélène Gille, who previously worked for 13 years at the Division of Ecological Sciences of UNESCO. She explains that it is important to link sustainable development to creation and creative industries. More particularly in the offer that they propose. Indeed, today’s consumers have real demands in terms of transparency and want sustainability to be a natural part of what they consume (and not mediocre greenwashing). The objective is to achieve this ecological transition that we have been talking about for years and to finally make it concrete through real actions from industries. We should already be in a positive performance, but we are not because too few companies integrate sustainable management seriously.

Therefore it is essential to train the future actors of these industries to sustainability. The new generations are in fact more sensitive to these issues because of the urgency we are facing.

It is important, especially for a higher education institution, to give them the keys to succeed in this ecological transition. Especially in the field of fashion, which remains one of the most polluting industries today.

The Bachelor in Fashion Sustainability is a unique solution for training these young people. IFA Paris is the first school in the world to offer a complete teaching program based on sustainable development.

Through this program, students learn how to make fashion more sustainable, implement various eco-design strategies and analyze and solve the ecological transition of fashion brands. The Bachelor Fashion Sustainability is much more than a simple program, it is a vision, a driver of change. Its ambition is to accelerate the transition of consumption and creation in the fashion industry.

Even if each of our programs includes the ecological and responsible dimension, this Bachelor is unique and is one of the key added values of the fashion school.
