In the fashion world, innovation and creativity are key elements for standing out. Simone Malan, a distinguished professor at IFA Paris fashion school, has introduced an innovative concept: "Music & Creativity". This Bachelor Fashion Design module consists of workshops aimed at exploring the deep connection between music and creativity in the fashion industry.

Explored Concepts

One of the fascinating aspects of these workshops is how they explore the relationship between visual and auditory environments. How can the perception of an object change when the sound environment is altered? The workshops seek to explain this complex relationship by isolating sensory perceptions and exploring the links between the senses. Fashion design students also delve into analogies between non-verbal languages by recording and analyzing interactions with objects. The idea is to understand how music can enhance or alter the perception of a design project by integrating sound design into the fashion design process.

Translation of Visual Elements into Music

A key point addressed is the translation of visual elements into music. The workshops emphasize that there is no direct translation, but rather a combination of non-verbal languages that can be perceived as a language itself. Music is not merely a background describing an ambiance; it can express itself in synergy, contrast, or expand imagery by telling stories and adding non-visible contextual elements.

Module for the Bachelor program in Fashion Design

The "Music & Creativity" workshops explore the importance of musical awareness and skills in fashion and design activities. Objectives include developing skills related to listening, expression, creativity, and interaction with others. Participants also learn to effectively interact with other non-verbal languages to choose the best sound solutions for their projects. Participants are encouraged to be creative, think innovatively, understand the relationship between fashion and music, deal with challenges and performances, think and understand musical patterns, experience group performance, develop collaboration skills, and communicate their ideas with multiple non-verbal languages.

Teams are invited to investigate the relationship between music and another non-verbal language of their choice. Through research, experimentation, and prototype creation stages, students develop an experience that demonstrates the results of their research, including music.

By participating in these workshops, students gain a unique perspective that prepares them to push the boundaries of creativity in the fashion industry, integrating music as a powerful tool to enrich their projects and stimulate innovation.
