Joey Martin x IFA Paris Students: Redefining Menswear Design

Posted on 16/02/2026

How do you design a menswear collection when working within the framework of an existing brand? This is the challenge given to second-year students in the Bachelor in Fashion Design at IFA Paris through the Menswear module, developed in collaboration with the French brand Joey Martin’s.

During this module, students analyze the brand’s universe and study its market positioning in order to understand its codes and propose a credible extension of its menswear identity.

The objective: to design a cohesive mini-collection structured around an iconic piece of the men’s wardrobe : the tailored jacket.

Understanding the Foundations of Men’s Tailoring

At IFA Paris, the Menswear module immerses students in this universe by combining historical research, contemporary trend analysis, and technical development.

The module begins with an in-depth study of the historical and contemporary landscape of men’s fashion. Students explore archives, deconstruct traditional suit constructions, and analyze the evolution of tailoring codes across decades.

This initial phase helps them understand the structural logic of menswear: balance of proportions, shoulder architecture, precision of cuts, and the dialogue between rigidity and fluidity.

Ashley Janine, a second-year student in the Bachelor in Fashion Design, explains:

“Designing for men can be complex, as silhouettes often remain very simple. You have to find a balance between pieces that are easy to wear and a proposal that brings something extra.”

Designing a Collection for Joey Martin’s

The project consists of developing a mini-collection of six to eight silhouettes, with a tailored jacket as the central and signature piece.

Before starting to design, students go through an in-depth analysis phase: competitor research, trend forecasting, understanding the brand’s key pieces, and observing its target customer. The challenge is to respect the brand’s DNA while integrating a personal vision.

Ashley Janine adds: “The brand is very minimal, mostly focused on jeans, T-shirts, and hats. We were asked to explore a new direction or expand that universe with our own interpretation.”

The Tailored Jacket: A Central Piece

The Menswear module at IFA Paris covers the entire creative process. Students develop a comprehensive file including a mood board, market research, positioning, color palette, and fabric selection. They build a coherent storytelling, create a structured line-up, and produce the technical drawings for their collection.

Students then design a tailored jacket, produced as a prototype, demonstrating their mastery of cutting, assembly, and finishing techniques. This work is closely connected to parallel pattern-making classes and requires a strong understanding of garment construction, from pattern drafting to sewing.

Beyond the creative production, the module encourages students to adopt a critical perspective on their own process. Each stage of development is approached as progressive learning. The final presentation allows students to present their collection, defend their concept, and assert their creative identity in a professional context.
