Main tasks

A Patternmaker's key responsibilities:

  • Translate Designs into Technical Patterns: Transform sketches and design concepts into precise technical patterns with seam allowances, grading rules, and construction details.
  • Develop Sample Prototypes: Create physical or digital prototypes to assess fit, drape, and functionality of the garment before mass production.
  • Ensure Pattern Accuracy & Fit: Analyze patterns for accuracy, identify and rectify any fit issues, ensuring garments meet design specifications.
  • Technical Drawing & Documentation: Create detailed technical drawings and specifications for production teams, clearly communicating construction methods and material usage.
  • Material Expertise & Efficiency: Select appropriate materials for garments and optimize pattern layouts to minimize fabric waste.

Required qualities

Essential Qualities for a Patternmaker:

  • Spatial Reasoning & Visualization: The ability to visualize 3D garments from 2D patterns, considering drape, volume, and fit.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong understanding of garment construction techniques, pattern terminology, and ability to translate designs into precise technical specifications.
  • Analytical Thinking & Problem-Solving: Analyzing patterns for fit issues, identifying and rectifying errors in construction, and finding efficient solutions.
  • Math & Measurement Skills: Precise measurement techniques, proficiency in pattern grading rules, and ability to calculate material usage.
  • Strong Communication & Collaboration: Effectively communicate technical details with designers, sample makers, and production teams.
  • Proficiency in Patternmaking Software: Skilled in using industry-standard patternmaking software (Gerber AccuMark, Lectra Modaris, Optitex) to create, edit, and manipulate digital patterns.
