At the age of 57, Barbie, Mattel’s famous doll, will be the subject of an exhibition at the Parisian Museum Des Arts Décoratif from March 10th until September 18th, 2016.
Far from being a simple toy, and despite being often criticized, Barbie is an iconic figure which reflects the social, cultural and esthetical evolution of our society. It is also a fashion icon, as famous designers or brands such as Dior, Thierry Mugler, Christian Lacroix, Jean-Paul Gaultier or Christian Louboutin have designed a wardrobe for her. To perpetuate this tradition with the next generation of fashion designers, the Museum Des Arts Décoratif organized a competition for students of international Fashion Design Schools, on the theme “Dress Barbie ".
Rafiga Hajili, our brilliant Azerbaijani first year student of the Bachelor Fashion Design and Technology of IFA Paris, is one of the 12 winners of this competition out of 190 participants. Following on the trend Barbie is a reflection of our society, Rafiga imagined a « gender fluid » silhouette, including a leather coat and a backpack, which will be part of the exhibition, besides Barbie garments designed by the most famous fashion designers. Bravo Rafiga!
